William has been a director for over 25 years, however, he made his professional debut as an actor in 1971, at the age of 14, in London’s West End as the Winslow Boy. After discovering the world of opera at 17, he began to train his tenor voice, going on to perform in a great number of musicals.
In 1991 he joined Music Theatre London, where he became Executive Producer. In 1993, when William had to take over the direction of a production of Così fan tutte at short notice, he realised within half an hour of the first rehearsal that this was the job he had really been looking for. Within a year he had resigned from the company and has been a freelance Opera Director ever since.
William has built up a solid international career. Apart from work in his native UK, he has also directed operas in Sweden, Germany, France, Denmark, Norway, Holland and Estonia. Additionally, William has also worked extensively within the opera training field, building long-standing work alliances with most of the opera conservatoires in Scandinavia and the UK.
William also continues to work in management. He recently spent two seasons as Artistic Director at West Green House Opera, a summer opera festival in Hampshire, and is currently Artistic Director of Tarantara Productions, a company formed to perform the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.

“I have always managed to find a very rewarding balance between my work as a director in a wide variety of companies with that of my work as a teacher, in which of course I draw on my many years’ experience as a performer.”
